Why are you not allowed to gamble if you’re under 18?
1. Young people are still developing
The brains of young people are still developing. That makes you more sensitive to excitement, rewards and triggers. It’s also harder to understand the risks.
2. Gambling can be addictive
Research shows that people who start gambling young are more likely to get addicted later in life. You may think that gambling is an easy way to win money, but it’s not. You usually lose money.
3. Protection against money problems
Many young people have little money or don’t earn anything yet. If you start gambling, you can quickly get into debt. Debts like this can cause problems for many years, sometimes for your whole life.
4. Young people are sensitive to advertising and peer pressure
Gambling advertisements often look fun and exciting. Young people are especially sensitive to this. That’s why gambling companies are not allowed to make advertisements aimed at young people.
5. Young people are not legally responsible yet
From the age of 18, you are fully responsible for your own money and choices. Before that age, you are not. That’s why the government protects young people from risks.
