In April 2017, the Netherlands Gambling Authority announced the first results of an operation targeting online advertisers of online games of chance.
The decision to launch this operation was prompted directly by 17 websites which were advertising online gambling operators who had previously been fined by the Netherlands Gambling Authority.
Investigations revealed that the owners of these 17 websites also owned almost 400 other registered websites.
The majority of the websites investigated removed the advertising after receiving a demand for information and/or notice stating the authority’s intention to impose an order subject to periodic penalty payments, thereby removing any further need to impose such an order.
An order subject to periodic penalty payments had to be imposed on at least one website, however, to ensure it ceased the advertising concerned.
The enforcement action taken by the Netherlands Gambling Authority has ensured that advertising for online gambling websites on TV and in printed media has been virtually eliminated.
